Work: Skate & Commercial

The majority of my work spans across the skateboarding, music, documentary and commercial genres. Somehow they are all linked to skateboarding. I became involved in the skateboarding industry as a sponsored skateboarder in my early twenties, with a short spree of success I managed to get myself on the cover of the national skate mag amongst other various bits of coverage. After suffering a few injuries I decided to try things out behind the lense. I have since had numerous clients in the extreme sports industry including Quiksilver, DC Shoes and Maverick Skateparks. I also work for Chemical Records and a variety of clients through Clockwise Media in the music industry. Having trained in the art of documentary at University and graduating with an award winning film, I pride myself on an original and stylistic approach to film-making, squeezing in a narrative were I can.

My first bit of work for Bristol based music and clothes retailer Chemical Records took form in a promo video for a collaborative T-shirt launch between DC Shoes and Chemical records. Shot, directed and edited by me starring UK DC rider Dave Snaddon. The video was a huge success and started a flourishing working relationship with both Chemical and DC.

I filmed a lot of the footage on this promo for Boomtown festival with Clockwise Media.

I was stoked to get a massive bran like Quiksilver under my belt. I got sent this footage of the UK Quiksilver team touring through Brazil which I conformed from 60 – 25fps for a smooth slow mo effect and graded with magic bullet. Quiksilver were very happy with the results.

My first bit of work directly for DC Shoes involved my following the UK skate team across the country on the ‘Lace em up’ tour. Shot with my Sony Z5 camera and Canon 550d HDSLR. These are two of my favourite clips from the tour. You can view all the clips in this vimeo album.

After the DC x Chemical collabo clip I was commissioned to produce this music video for rising star of the Electronic music scene Phaeleh, through Chemical Records to coincide with his latest album launch. With a tiny budget we shot this all in one day around Bristol and edited it in two. Considering its my very first music video I’m pretty stoked its racked up over a quarter of a million hits in under a year on youtube. Was fun to make!

After a couple of successful projects with DC Shoes I was invited on the 2010 Big Push to produce a film that would compete against other brands such as eS, NikeSB, Addidas and iPath. The resulting film took DC to to the top rankings in the voting race for the first few weeks, finishing second overall which was a huge improvement to the previous years position. Shot and edited by me on my Sony Z5 and the photographer’s Canon 5d Mark 2.

A little skate video experiment here. Filmed on my Canon 550d and my friends mobile phone, we thought we’d try and see if Techno music fits with skateboarding as I’ve been getting really into it lately, particularly this band Art Department through my lovely girlfriend’s musical taste. Coincidently you can learn more about the origins of techno music from this amazing short film produced by Resident Advisor through one of my employers Clockwise Media.

Skating on cine film this time. A slightly more personal project featuring my friends chasing a steam car in the countryside I grew up in, set to the music my parents used to listen to when I was a kid. Aaaaahh…

Pre HD era I had just come out of University and while still fairly active as a sponsored skateboarder I pulled in all my useful contacts to create an independent skate video project called ‘InSitu’. Acting as producer. director and 2nd camera. You can view the whole film in this vimeo album.
