Work: Community & Young People

After having spent 3 years at the Watershed Media Centre co-ordinating eShed.net I made a lot of contacts in the media and education sectors in Bristol. As this post was part time I consiquently worked freelance on a range of projects either producing films for, with or about young people and facilitated many creative workshops. Since my time at the Watershed I have continued my work with community, educational and locally funded organisations and have developed a strand of work with clients such as Bristol Old Vic, Remix (Colston Halls Young Music Project), BBC, Bristol City Council and the Duke of Edingburgh award.

I was commissioned by Bristol City Council to produce a series of short films to be played at the 2010 Young Person of The Year Awards ceremony. Each film would show an adult talking about the young person who was nominated. I really enjoyed shooting the films and met some lovely people.

This is the young person who won.

I also had to produce a film about the Duke of Edingburgh Award for the same ceremony.

And a film about the UK Youth Parliament…

This is my trailer for Bristol Old Vic’s BRAVE project.. Consiquently my job was to produce a documentary feature in the project which apparently the director of Warhorse watched and admired…

During my time at the Watershed I mentored a group of young film-makers through a First Light funded film-making project together with mentors from the BBCOmni Productions,Bristol Old Vic and Films @59. The film won an award at the 2011 First Light movie awards for best film by over 11s. Click the image above or here to see my blog clip of our star studded trip to the Awards ceremony in London. Above is the award winning film the young people produced under my wing.

This is perhaps the most iconic film that I made about young people as it details my approach to working with them. Made a little while ago (pre HD era), I was enrolled onto the BBC’s pilot training scheme known as face2face. We had a brief to make a film about anything we wanted. As I was a bit older than the other participants I decided to make my film about them and my experiences of mentoring them at on various other courses. The film acted as a pilot for the training scheme and helped me get a fir bit of work with other youth organisations.
